Apps may conjure images of smartphones and Apple's iPad, but connected TVs increasingly are muscling into the space. Consumers have downloaded more than 2 million apps from the Samsung TV App Store in less than a year. In fact, the company said while it took some 268 days for the first one million apps to be downloaded, the second million took just 53 days more.
The store currently has some 380 apps, more than two thirds of them free, in a number of categories that users can download
Samsung said the most popular apps so far are YouTube, Hulu Plus, ESPN Next Level, AccuWeather, Google Maps and Texas Holdem. Samsung is projecting sales of some 12 million connected TVs this year.
The company, and its competitors are betting big on smart TVs and associated apps, hoping to entice customers looking for easy access to the Internet on their TV sets.
