Brightcove partners with FreeWheel on HTML5 video ad solution

Monetization of online video continues to be an often-quixotic pursuit for many publishers, especially as more views are gobbled up by HTML5-only devices such as Apple's iPad. Online video platform Brightcove today said it will go live with an HTML5 video advertising solution by June, partnering with digital video ad management platform FreeWheel.

Brightcove's VP of marketing Jeff Whatcott today wrote in a blog post that publishers will be able to use FreeWheel's Monetization Rights Management (MRM) product to deliver advertising-supported video to HTML5-compatible devices, including the Apple iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. The product builds on Brightcove's native support for HTML5 and provide turnkey integration with FreeWheel's MRM.

The two companies already share a number of customers, among them some of the largest media companies in the world.

"While we have seen tremendous interest from our customers in rolling out HTML5 video experiences, the ability to effectively monetize the content has been a hurdle for early adopters," said Brightcove chairman and chief executive officer, Jeremy Allaire. "Together with FreeWheel, we are committed to helping these customers extend their ad-supported strategies to every screen and capitalize on the fast-growing audiences using HTML5 devices."

Brightcove and FreeWheel expect to roll out the HTML5 video advertising solution to joint customers worldwide at the beginning of June.
