Ooyala: Tablet owners really into watching video

Tablet owners are taking advantage of their devices to watch an increasing amount of video, according to third quarter data collected by Ooyala's video analytics platform released Thursday.

According to the report, the overall share of tablet video viewing time grew 90 percent in the past two quarters as 71 percent of tablet owners spent their time watching videos at least 10 minutes long and 30 percent spent time watching videos for more than an hour. Gaming consoles, too, came in for a big boost, with the time users spent watching video more than doubling in the third quarter. Desktop viewers, the Ooyala statistics said, tuned in to live video for an average of 40 minutes.

The results are an indication that online video distribution is redefining television, said Bismarck Lepe, co-founder and president of products for Ooyala.

"For premium content providers, the ability to closely monitor consumption across devices and across an entire network is critical," he said in a news release. "It's the only way to have a holistic strategy for optimizing revenue."

Ooyala, which last summer received a Telstra-led investment of $35 million, measures the viewing habits of "nearly 200 million viewers" across 130 countries each month to provide the quarterly statistics.
