Disney+ jazzes up its user experience to celebrate anniversary

Disney+ is adding several enhancements to its user experience to coincide with the company’s Disney+ Day celebration.

The streaming service, which launched two years ago, is introducing a new Inline Hero row to highlight content collections on the home screen. The bigger and brighter feature will include a logo, dedicated background, tiles for most of the titles and a button to take viewers to the full collection.

Disney+ is also adding a new Poster Row to the home screen, which it said will borrow from the physical theater experience “where posters of the newest blockbuster films greet the audience.” The format will be used for new additions to the Disney+ catalog and will feature large, vertically oriented tiles.

Disney+ is also refreshing the landing pages for its five brands: Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic. The brand pages now include new intro videos and supplemental static artwork featured on web and mobile devices.

“It was important for us to find the right balance of movement within the composition that could bring the image to life while not overwhelming the viewer. A slow zoom allowed me to unify the scene — bringing the characters together while also maintaining their individuality,” said Ilma Bilic, product designer at Disney+, in a blog post.

The UX updates arrive the same week that Disney+ is celebrating its launch anniversary with new content, promos and teasers about series and movies coming soon.

Through Sunday, November 14, new and eligible returning subscribers (with no current active entitlement) can get one month of Disney+ for $1.99 before it jumps back up to its standard $7.99/month rate. Disney+ is also adding a significant amount of new titles to its content lineup including recent films like Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” and “Jungle Cruise” along with new Disney+ original film “Home Sweet Home Alone.” The service will also add new specials from Marvel and Pixar.

Today, the company also provided an updated look at the content is has coming from each of its brands including Walt Disney Animation Studios’ first-ever animated series, “Baymax,” and “Moon Knight,” a new Marvel series coming to Disney+ next year.
