FuboTV hit by cyber attack during World Cup match

*Update December 20, 2022: Fubo TV said its investigation into the cyber attack is ongoing but has “no reason to believe that credit cards were compromised" for subscribers.

“Consistent with industry standards, we record only partial credit card numbers and expiration dates and do not store the full number or CVV information. We use a third-party vendor to process and store customer credit card data, and we have no indication the vendor’s systems were affected by this incident.

Additionally, we also use industry-standard, enterprise grade encryption and hashing techniques to protect password information stored on our systems.

We continue to work with industry-leading response firm Mandiant on our ongoing investigation and we will update consumers at the appropriate time when we have more information to share,” Fubo TV said in a statement provided to Fierce.

Sports-centric virtual MVPD FuboTV said it was hit by a cyber attack Wednesday during a World Cup semifinal match.

In a statement released Thursday the live TV streaming service noted that on December 14, the day France faced off against Morocco during FIFA’s Qatar 2022 World Cup, many customers had trouble accessing their accounts.

“The incident was not related to any bandwidth constraints on Fubo’s part. We were instead the target of a criminal cyber attack,” Fubo stated.

“FuboTV takes this matter very seriously. Once we detected the attack, we immediately took steps to contain the incident and worked to restore service to all of our users as quickly as possible,” the company continued.

Fubo said service was fully restored by Wednesday evening, adding it regrets the disruption caused in the meantime.

“We have reported the incident to law enforcement and have engaged Mandiant, an industry-leading incident response firm, to assist with our continuing investigation and response,” the statement continued. “Our primary focus currently is on ensuring that the incident is fully contained and that there is no threat of further disruption for any of our customers.”

The company hasn’t disclosed how many customers were impacted, or if any subscriber account information was compromised in the cyber attack. Contacted by Fierce, a FuboTV spokesperson said the company would provide an update once it has more information to share.*See update above.

“The entire FuboTV team is absolutely dedicated to delivering an exceptional experience while protecting customer data. We appreciate the trust our customers have in us and the opportunity to serve them everyday,” Fubo stated, adding its working with outside cybersecurity experts to address the situation and prevent any similar incidents from happening in the future.
