FuboTV rolling out 4K HDR content for its streaming TV service

Sports-focusing virtual MVPD fuboTV is rolling out (in beta) 4K Ultra HD and HDR10 compatible content, starting with the 2018 World Cup.

Starting Monday, main broadcasts of Russia 2018 matches on FOX and FS1—but not Fox Sports bonus feeds—are available in 4K HDR10 with fuboTV on all Chromecast and Fire TV devices that support the format. FuboTV will also launch 4K HDR10 on Roku and Apple TV in the coming weeks.

“Launching 4K HDR is a testament to our dedication and relentless pursuit to developing for consumers the world's premier live video streaming service for live sports and entertainment,” said David Gandler, co-founder and CEO of fuboTV, in a statement.

According to a news release, users who want to view ultra-high definition and high dynamic range content must have a 4K HDR-enabled television, HDMI 2.0/HDCP 2.2 compatible cable and run the fuboTV app on a streaming device that supports the formats. Bandwidth speeds of 30Mbps-40Mbps or higher are recommended and 4K HDR-capable TVs may also need calibration to present the content correctly.

FuboTV said it is the first vMVPD to begin live streaming in 4K HDR, putting it ahead of DirecTV Now, Sling TV, PlayStation Vue and YouTube TV in that category.

FuboTV tapped ATEME for the encoding software it’s using for its UHD and HDR streams. ATEME’s Titan Live virtualized software for SD, HD and UHD is built to run on Linux, Virtual Machines and Micro-Services.
