Netflix original 'Ozark' tops Nielsen's streaming ratings with 1.73B minutes streamed

Nielsen’s most recent weekly streaming ratings place Netflix's content at a strong showing, compared to that of other subscription-based providers. Most notably, Netflix original series “Ozark” claimed the top spot in minutes streamed – with 1.73 billion minutes for the week of May 9-15.

The streaming content ratings are divided into three categories: original, acquired and movies, as well as a compiled list of all categories. Netflix dominated the compiled rankings, taking almost every spot in the top 10. Only Hulu’s original “Candy” penetrated that list at sixth place, with 577 million minutes streamed in a five-episode run.

Netflix’s overwhelming showing can also be said for the acquired series chart. “Cocomelon,” a childrens' educational show, was the top performer with 715 million minutes streamed on Netflix. Police procedurals like “Criminal Minds” and “NCIS” came in second and third place. While long-running drama series like “Supernatural” and “Grey’s Anatomy” took the sixth and seventh spots.

The only non-Netflix streamer that made the acquired rankings cut was Amazon, appearing at ninth place with “Spongebob Squarepants” at 260 million minutes.

The original series and movies listings saw slightly more variety with streaming services. On the originals-side, “Candy” took fourth place this time, whereas Amazon’s “Outer Range” and Disney+’s “Moon Knight” received eighth and ninth place – 292 million minutes and 289 million minutes streamed, respectively.

Netflix took the remainder of the top 10 streamed originals. “The Lincoln Lawyer” came just below “Ozark” at second place, having streamed 884 million minutes for a mere 10 episode-run. “Grace and Frankie,” which aired its seventh and final season earlier this year, saw 584 million minutes streamed at third place.

These Nielsen rankings don’t include the performance by Netflix’s latest season of “Stranger Things,” which debuted May 27. The streaming service said the show’s fourth season took the number one spot in 93 countries during the premiere weekend – with 286.7 million hours streamed in that same period.

Netflix’s streaming numbers seem like a pleasant surprise, after the service reported a first quarter loss of 200,000 net subscribers.

Lastly, both Netflix and Disney performed well in Nielsen’s streaming movie ratings. The list was topped by Netflix’s “Senior Year” at 797 million minutes streamed, followed by Netflix’s “Our Father” at 450 million minutes. Disney’s “Encanto,” which released last November, came third with 382 million minutes streamed.

Disney+ also saw animated movies “Turning Red” and “Moana” make the cut, at seventh and ninth place, respectively. “Turning Red” garnered 227 million minutes streamed whereas Moana, which came to theaters back in 2016, saw 161 million minutes streamed.
