Redbox unlocks WarnerMedia, Sony content for AVOD service

Redbox is keeping up its rapid streaming expansion strategy by today adding new content agreements with WarnerMedia and Sony Pictures Television for its AVOD service.

The company’s content deal with WarnerMedia adds AVOD movies on a monthly basis, starting with “The Astronaut’s Wife,” “Collateral Damage” and “The Long Kiss Goodnight.” The deal with Sony is for films including “Resident Evil: Retribution,” “Underworld: Evolution,” “We Own the Night” and “Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning.”

“WarnerMedia and Sony Pictures both have amazing film catalogs which our audience will enjoy for hours on end, and they will be completely free,” said Redbox CEO Galen Smith in a statement. “We look forward to growing the number of films offered through our AVOD streaming service from both studios in the coming months.”

Redbox has been steadily adding new content agreements for both its AVOD and free ad-supported streaming television (FAST) service including recent deals with Lionsgate and Cox Media. The company is also planning to launch an SVOD channels platform in 2022.

Redbox is still in the process of working with potential channel partners and getting them signed up. Smith said the platform will continue to expand as his company gets a better understanding of what consumers want.

“For us, it’s about providing that simplicity to the consumer and helping them make that switch. Think about the power that Redbox has…let’s say someone’s at the kiosk, they’ve found the movie they want to watch this week, they’re checking out, and in that checkout flow it offers you a free, seven-day trial for a subscription service. The power of having those 40,000 kiosks becomes a huge differentiator for us,” he said.

Redbox has also been setting new deals with technology partners including Comcast FreeWheel and Wurl while adding distribution promotions with companies including Roku and Walmart.
