Netflix to release three new mobile games this month

Netflix continues its foray into the gaming scene with the release of three new mobile games this March.

Two games are scheduled to release today on Netflix's mobile app; “This is a True Story”, a puzzle role playing game about scavenging for water in Sub-Saharan Africa, and “Shatter Remastered”, an updated version of the classic brick breaking game. “Into The Dead 2: Unleashed”, a first-person shooter set in a zombie apocalypse, is “coming soon” later this month, according to Netflix.

The additions will boost Netflix’s game library to a total of 17 mobile games.

“This is a True Story” and “Shatter Remastered” will be available for download via Netflix’s app today at 2 p.m. Pacific Time. Android, iOS and tablet users will be able to download the games from the app’s dedicated games row. The games released early on the App Store and Google Play, at 10 a.m. PT.

Netflix first ventured into the video game space last July with an in-app integration of two “Stranger Things” games, based off Netflix's popular original series.

The streaming service officially unveiled Netflix Games in November, boasting no ads or in-app purchases. Netflix customers can access games through multiple devices, depending on their subscription tier.

Expanding its cloud gaming portfolio, Netflix acquired Finnish gaming studio Next Games in March for about $72 million. That marked Netflix’s second studio acquisition, after buying Night School Studio last September.

Next Games CEO Teemu Huuhtanen said joining forces with Netflix “presents an opportunity for a logical and exciting continuation of our strategy to craft interactive experiences for the world to enjoy.”

Diving into video games and other hands-on entertainment may help Netflix grow its subscriber base in 2022, after narrowly missing its goal of 8.5 million new users in Q4 2021. Netflix is further pushing user interaction with its launch of Trivia Quest, a daily interactive trivia game, starting April 1.
